Student placement

We recognise that qualifications and training make an important contribution to the quality of the care and education. We occasionally offer placements to full time students undertaking Early Years' qualifications and training or who wish to complete a related course or work experience but this is dependent upon staff at the time and at the discretion of the management team.

We aim to provide for students on placement with us experiences which contribute to the successful completion of their studies or allow them an insight into how we run our setting, providing examples of quality practice in Early Years care and education.

In order to achieve this:

  • We require schools placing students under the age of 17 years with us to vouch for their good character

  • We supervise students under the age of 19 years at all times and do not allow them to have unsupervised access to children

  • Students who are placed with us on a short term basis are not counted in our staffing ratios. Students and apprentices who are placed for longer periods may be counted in our staffing ratios at the level below their level of study provided the management team consider them to be competent and responsible

  • For students who are with us for more than two weeks an Enhanced Disclosure through the DBS will be obtained

  • Students who are not DBS checked will not be left unsupervised with children at any time

  • Our employers' liability insurance and public liability insurance covers both trainees and voluntary helpers

  • We require students to complete the necessary preschool paperwork and adhere to policy

  • They will be given an induction to working at the setting

  • We co-operate with students' tutors in order to help students to fulfil the requirements of their course of study is appropriate
